People have thousands of reasons to avoid waking up early in the morning – especially during Brahma Muhurat. Some even call it an old-fashioned practice. But this tradition has stood the test of time because it is supported by both scriptures and science.
What are Muhurats?
As per scriptures, a day is divided into 30 Muhurats (each lasting 48 minutes). Out of these, two occur before sunrise. The first and most auspicious one is Brahma Muhurat.
वर्णं कीर्ति मतिं लक्ष्मीं, स्वास्थ्यामाग्रश्व विंदति ।

The Meaning of Brahma Muhurat
The term Brahma Muhurat is derived from:
- Brahma – divine presence, higher knowledge, or Lord Brahma
- Muhurat – a specific period of time
Thus, Brahma Muhurat means “the time of God”. It is the last Prahar before sunrise. Scriptures strongly recommend waking up at least 90 minutes before sunrise for maximum benefit.
